Personal Page – knowledge, hobby, passion

Server made from second-hand parts?

Last year, I tried several solutions to test software, host my own page from scratch and so on… I tried VPSes, Dedicated Servers and.. maybe it’s easier to manage, maybe I don’t need to care about outages, because 99% SLA is a task for company that is hosting my VPS. But I came to the moment where I rented 6 VPS for amount more than 100 EUR/month. So I decided to move to Dedicated server – same amount, but many problems….

My solution – build server

Using my knowledge and second-hand parts I bought in Internet on Allegro, Esus-IT and new parts from X-Kom, I built server with specification:

Motherboard: Jingsha X79P, LGA2011, Quad-Channel
CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2660 v2 (10c/20t @2.20GHz)
RAM: Samsung DDR3-1600 REG ECC 48GB (3x16GB)
Main Disk: 2x Crucial BX500 480GB RAID1
RAID Controller: Axagon PCES-SH4
Storage Disk: WD Blue 2TB 2.5″ 5400RPM
OS: Debian 10 “Buster”
Hypervisor: Proxmox VE 6.2
Virtualization: KVM

What are the results of this experiment? I will post later….
