Why Xeon in my Server?

Intel CPU – Pixabay, Bru-nO

I am not a fanboy of AMD or Intel… My main PC has AMD Ryzen 7 3700X inside, RawFlight server has AMD Ryzen 7 1800X inside. It’s kinda cheap but for my needs I needed more cores than new technology.

OK, but.. why?
I am not a pro. I am a hobbyst. I don’t need a lot of power, but I have never worked on Intel Xeon before. My experience with Intel stopped on…. Intel Core i5-4690k. Also, I noticed that Server with R7 1800X is quite.. warm. 65 Celcius degrees when CPU utilization is about 25%. Kinda warm, right?

I found that Xeon E5-2660v2 is more power-efficient than E3-1246v3 and much more powerful. Of course, 10 cores with Hyper-Threading (20 logical cores) against 4 cores with Hyper Threading makes a large difference.

Because it was a 2nd-hand part, the price difference was about 10$ (40 PLN), so it was a no-brainer to get E5. More than 200% more powerful.

Also I was thinking about AMD Opteron, but it was so hard to find any ATX/microATX motherboard that will allow me to mount AMD Opteron. Also I found it impossible to find a cooling for this CPU.

AMD EPYC? Not now… I’d love to have these 64 cores & 128 threads, but… not now.

AMD is warm. What about Xeon?
To the Xeon E5 I mounted the cheapest SilentiumPC cooling system – Fera 3 120mm. I ran a stress test and… 55 Celcius degress in 100% stress (20 cores on 100%). Sounds cool, right?
